Separated from the Mainland of Seattle by a narrow stretch of Puget Sound, Vashon Island is one of the best-kept quality-of-life secrets in the region. I do not know how many times I have talked to people on the telephone and heard the comment, "I've lived in this area for twenty (ten, five) years, but I have never been to Vashon Island." Yet one half of employed islanders commute from the island five days a week to work in the surrounding area.
The trip to downtown Seattle can be made directly by foot-passenger ferry in twenty minutes. An auto ferry makes a fifteen minute direct connection to West Seattle, where one is twenty minutes from Sea-Tac International Airport or fifteen minutes from the heart of downtown Seattle. Metro Transit operates on the island, and the bus stops at the ferry terminal, or one may board an express on the island and travel directly to the city. To go to parts due south of Seattle, take the Burien Freeway, which avoids traffic congestion on I-5. Further south destinations, such as Portland, Olympia, or Crystal Mt., are best accessed via the Tahlequah ferry on the south end of Vashon Island. This ferry travels directly to Pt. Defiance Park in Tacoma. The way to Highway 101 and coastal regions, begins with a five-minute ride on the Southworth link of the ferry, departing form the north end of the island.
As a part of King County in which the city of Seattle is located, the island benfits from many amenities unavailable in other rural zoned area - mass transit, library system, airport (small planes only), complete medical services, transfer station, road and shoreline maintenance services.
If you have never been here, but are interested in knowing more, I have lived here for nearly thirty years. Give me a call! I would be happy to talk with you about the possibilities awaiting you on Vashon Island!
